So the newspapers are starting to catch on
Over the past week or so there have been a flood of write-ups in some major newspapers like the Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope blog and People Magazine. Florida’s Sun-Sentinel also includes a feature about Disney’s first black princess. They are all short blurbs, mostly introducing Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Princess Tiana. What’s interesting is that in the Times blog, Rose describes her character as “America’s first black princess.” She said, “We’ve never had an American princess. So, the scope and the significance is larger than people even realize.”
Hmmm…I never thought of it that way, but that may be a good counter-argument for my “why isn’t Tiana a fairy princess?” argument. I can’t think of any Disney princess that was decidedly American. Jasmine was from the Middle East, Belle from France, Ariel — was it Atlantis? Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, I can’t remember where they were. I just assumed in “a land far away.”
I think it’s fitting that the first American Disney princess would be representative of America’s diversity. Score for Disney on that! I am now even more looking forward to seeing this movie!
I’ll be adding more links to news articles in the next few days. Enjoy!
